Blizzard Hits California and Nevada: Interstate Closed, Thousands Without Power

A powerful blizzard swept through the Sierra Nevada overnight, unleashing the most significant storm of the season. As gusty winds and heavy rain battered lower elevations, a long stretch of Interstate 80 in California shut down, leaving tens of thousands of customers without power. The forecast predicts up to 10 feet of snow in some areas.

Key Points:

  1. Interstate 80 Closure:

  • California authorities closed 100 miles of I-80 due to spin-outs, high winds, and low visibility. The freeway remains inaccessible from the California-Nevada border near Reno to Emigrant Gap, California.

  • The National Weather Service in Reno warns of blizzard conditions and blowing snow, reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile.

  • High Avalanche Danger: Backcountry areas in the central Sierra, including the greater Lake Tahoe region, face high to extreme avalanche danger through Sunday evening.

  1. Power Outages:

  • Pacific Gas & Electric reported around 24,000 households and businesses without electricity.

  • More than 25 million people are under winter weather alerts as the storm continues its assault.

  1. Ski Resorts and Tornado Touchdown:

  • Some ski resorts closed Friday and plan to remain shut on Saturday to clear snow. Updates on reopening will be provided Saturday morning.

  • A tornado touched down in Madera County, causing damage to an elementary school.

  1. Palisades Tahoe:

  • The largest resort on the north end of Tahoe aims to reopen some slopes at the lowest elevation on Saturday.

  • However, all chairlifts at neighboring Alpine Meadows will remain closed for a second day due to forecasts of “heavy snow and winds over 100 mph.”

In summary, this winter storm has significantly impacted the region, prompting authorities to take safety measures. Stay informed and safe as the blizzard continues to rage. 🌨️❄️
